Staying sexually healthy
It’s simple. The only good sex is safe sex. When taking risks could mean anything from uncomfortable infections to death – not to mention unwanted pregnancies - there really is no argument. So cast your eyes over the info below and make sure your sex life is a healthy one. Condom usage is your best protection against most sexually transmitted diseases - click through to Bliss Condoms to order yours. Another great preventative measure that's available to girls is exercising those all-important pelvic floor muscles. Click through to have a look at our Pelvic Toner which is a brilliant aid to a strong, sexy, healthy fanny.

  1. Aids: to rule out developing Aids, the fatal disease that follows contraction of the HIV virus, ALWAYS use condoms. This means in EVERY situation where you’re having sex with a new partner. Remember, there are often no symptoms for several years after the virus has been contracted, which means carriers can appear perfectly healthy. The only way to make totally sure that a new partner doesn’t carry the virus is to have an Aids test – this is particularly advisable if he or she has a history of injected drug use or promiscuity. Confidential testing is available at STI clinics.

  2. Herpes: because genital Herpes is contagious, you can and probably will catch it by having sex with someone who has the disease. And although it’s virtually never fatal, this is definitely something you want to avoid at all costs. With the main symptoms being painful and horribly itchy blisters on the genitals, once caught this disease is with you for life. Again, using condoms or femidoms will protect against infection – ALWAYS use them during oral sex if you or your partner have cold-sores as these can cause genital Herpes.

  3. Gonorrhea: also infamously known as ‘the clap’, Gonorrhea is one of the most common STIs, with over 50,000 cases reported from STI clinics every year in the UK alone. If untreated it can lead to ectopic pregnancy in women and infertility in both sexes. Condoms or femidoms are really the only way to guard against Gonorrhea.

  4. Chlamydia: this is a relatively common sexually transmitted infection (STI), which, if caught early, can be treated with antibiotics. If not, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which in twenty per cent of women can cause infertility and ectopic pregnancy. It can also lead to infertility in men. As there’s about a sixty per cent chance of catching Chlamydia by having unprotected sex with a partner who’s infected, USE A CONDOM.

  5. Trichomoniasis: yet another good reason to use condoms, this nasty little infection often presents no symptoms in men and only Thrush-like symptoms in women. But the effects are far from trivial: if untreated it can cause early labour in women and leave both men and women vulnerable to a whole range of infections.

  6. Genital warts: again, condoms are the only really effective safeguard against developing these distinctly unattractive and highly infectious lumps and bumps. Although they’re harmless in the main, some strains have been linked to cervical cancer. While creams can calm them down, they don’t kill the virus, which can linger for as long as it takes the immune system to overcome it.

  7. Pubic lice: OK, so they’re harmless, but who wants little crab-like creatures (hence the terms ‘crabs’) crawling around in their pubic hair, head hair, eyelashes and eyebrows? Because they’re so easily passed on via contact with infected areas, pubic lice can be caught through non-penetrative sex. So even though condoms will drastically lower the risk of infection, they won’t rule it out altogether. It’s really down to using your eyes and your brains and, if you spot something suspicious, not being afraid to ask about it.

  8. The last word on condoms: always use stronger condoms and plenty of latex-friendly lube whenever you have anal sex, and use a new condom every time you shift between anus and vagina. Blissbox stocks a wide range of Durex condoms - click here for further information on our selection.
